The History of
Wheeler Street Church of God
The Wheeler Street Church of God in Saint Marys, Georgia has a very interesting history. Founded in 1932 by Elder Taylor W. Winberly, this was the first service was held in the home of Brother Timmy and Sister Flossie Williams. Many souls were saved, sanctified, and filled with the blessed Holy Ghost. Although, it had its beginning in a house, then the Masonic Hall, and for a brief period of time at the Knights of Pithians Hall, the church made progress. read more>> [......]

Eventually, the congregation bought a building of its own to conduct services. That building was located on Wheeler Street. In the later years, they built a new church just a few feet away (the existing church) to continue their progress for the Lord. The wear and tear of the church became evident, after a while. Therefore; the church's membership had to get busy to secure means to refurbish the church. The undertaking of this project included, repainting, re-roofing, padding the pews, adding central air and heat, carpet, chandeliers, and a new organ to the existing building. Additional new construction included, and educational wing, a pastor's study, a clerk's office, restrooms, and the fellowship hall. During that time, the services schedule included Sunday Services (Sunday school, morning worship, Young People's Endeavor (YPE), evening worship), Wednesday night worship, and Friday night worship. During this time of revival meetings, there were no limits. People were led to pray on their knees at the altar. Some nights, worshipers stayed at the altar for up to four hours.
On special holidays, namely Christmas and Easter, the church attendance increases.
